Applied Econometrics and International Development operates a rigorous peer review system designed to ensure the scholarly quality, empirical soundness, and academic credibility of all published research. Every manuscript submitted to the journal undergoes structured evaluation by qualified experts in applied econometrics, development economics, and related quantitative disciplines before any publication decision is reached.
Review Model
Double-Blind Peer Review System
Both author and reviewer identities are fully concealed throughout the entire review process. This model eliminates potential bias, ensures objective scholarly assessment, and guarantees that manuscripts are evaluated solely on their academic merit and methodological rigour โ independent of authorship, institutional affiliation, or geographic origin.

Policy Details
01ยง
Role and Importance of Peer Review
Peer review is the cornerstone of credible academic publishing. For a journal dedicated to applied econometrics and international development, it serves as the mechanism by which the editorial board assesses the scientific merit, methodological soundness, and policy relevance of submitted research. Reviewers provide constructive critical feedback that assists authors in strengthening their work and ensures that only research meeting the highest scholarly standards is disseminated to the global academic community.
02ยง
Editorial Screening
Prior to assignment for peer review, every manuscript undergoes a thorough editorial screening conducted by the editorial office. This initial stage includes plagiarism detection, scope and relevance assessment, verification of submission completeness, evaluation of reference quality, and a preliminary review of language and presentation standards. Manuscripts that do not satisfy the basic requirements of the journal at this stage are returned to the corresponding author with specific guidance for revision before further processing can occur.
03ยง
External Expert Review
Manuscripts that successfully pass editorial screening are assigned to a minimum of two independent peer reviewers with demonstrated expertise in the relevant subfields of applied econometrics, development economics, or quantitative social science. Reviewers are selected from the journal's international reviewer panel and are required to provide detailed, constructive assessments within an agreed timeframe. In instances where reviewer opinions conflict significantly, a third independent expert may be consulted to resolve the disagreement and inform the final editorial decision.
04ยง
Editorial Decision and Communication
Final publication decisions are the responsibility of the Editor-in-Chief and are made after careful consideration of all reviewer recommendations and, where applicable, the author's response to revision requests. All decisions โ whether acceptance, revision, or rejection โ are communicated to the corresponding author with a summary of reviewer feedback. Authors are given a defined period within which to submit revised manuscripts. The editorial board reserves the right to make final determinations on all matters of publication, including scope, quality, and fit with the journal's academic mission.
05ยง
Confidentiality and Conflict of Interest
All manuscripts under review are treated as strictly confidential documents. Reviewers must not share, discuss, or disclose the contents of any manuscript under evaluation. Any reviewer who identifies a potential conflict of interest โ including prior collaboration with the authors, institutional connection, or competitive research interest โ is required to declare this to the editorial office and withdraw from the review process. Similarly, authors may identify individuals they consider unsuitable as reviewers at the time of submission, and such requests will be considered at the discretion of the editorial board.
06ยง
Reviewer Recognition and Ethics
The editorial board of Applied Econometrics and International Development recognises the indispensable contribution of peer reviewers to the integrity of the publishing process. Reviewers are expected to provide timely, objective, and professionally constructive reports. They must not use unpublished information from manuscripts under review for their own research purposes. Reviewers who consistently provide high-quality evaluations may be acknowledged in the journal's annual reviewer listing. All review activities are conducted in accordance with the ethical standards set out by the Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE).
